104B Springfield Model 1868, .50-70 Caliber
Excellent bore and barrel length of 32 ½. This is an original Civil War musket
barrel that has been bored to 50-70 Caliber, with original front and rear long-range
flip-up sight. The barrel has marks near breech from tightening with improper wrench,
which can be easily blended in. Action is original 1868. It has marks on front near barrel
joint. Breechblock is stamped 1863 Springfield with spread Eagle crest. Stock
and all furniture are original for 1863 musket. It has two barrel-bands but is missing the
original nose cap, replaceable from Dixie Gunworks. The middle band area has been thinned
and band spring area inlaid with walnut. This is typical with model 1868 conversion. The
Civil war era stock has a few minor splits. One is behind the barrel at the rear action
screw, and one 1¼ long split at trap door and going to the front action screw. The
wood is complete and not missing. There is also one crack 1½ long near the middle
band inlay running from the barrel channel to the inlay. There are vestiges of a proof
mark on left wood opposite the lock. Overall the stock is a pleasing walnut, possibly
lightly sanded years ago, probably at the Springfield Factory. This should be a good
shooter overall.

105B Springfield 1866 First Model Allen Conversion,
.50-70 Caliber.
Barrel length is 32½. This
original Civil War barrel is sleeved with a 50-70 liner and is as new. The Lock plate is
very rare 1865 date, with spread Eagle Civil War musket plate. This is a two-band model.
All the accoutrements are brown-black. The First Model Allen conversion was originally .58
center-fire cartridge. This is the first use of 50-70 for U.S. troops. The butt stock is
in wonderful original condition, and has two sharp original inspectors marks on the
left side opposite lock. This gun even has the original sling! The only thing missing is
the tail end of the pin that holds the breechblock to the receiver, and this is easily
found from Dixie Gunworks.
This is a fine example of a rare old gun that should be a joy to shoot.
